Editor’s Notes - What’s Next in the Pipeline?

June 9th, 2018

Blackwater Creek - First, a brief note about our fist session - Blackwater Creek. I hope our listeners made it through the first part and listened to the 2nd and 3rd, because with every editing session I could tell I was improving in speed & technique. Got the workflow down fairly well after many false starts attempting to use various free and paid programs. So I just uploaded a revamped version of the first audio file for our listeners.

Coming up next - a session set amidst the towering forests of New England, our valiant players search for a young woman who's being held prisoner against her will somewhere deep within the gloom. It's looking like a two-part session. The first half will be edited and posted shortly! Keep listening!

Blackwater Creek Part 3 of 3: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario

June 9th, 2018

Givin' the Back of our Hand to Blackwater Creek!

This is the third and final episode in which we play the Call of Cthulhu scenario Blackwater Creek, one of the two scenarios included with the CoC 7th Edition Keeper's Screen.

In this episode we blast our way to a "solution" of sorts... Not to spoil any outcomes, but the scenario didn't exactly follow the game plan. We talk a little bit about future planning and overall everyone had a good time and I learned a few things about being a Keeper. Next, every time, will be just a little bit better.

Gluten Free!
There is very little background noise in this episode (phew) other than some canine intervention.

Hopefully you've stuck with us thus far! Now enjoy our last day in Blackwater Creek...
- Keeper of Arcane Secrets Willie with our gangsters Jake, Jan, Aaron, and Scott, and the Cruncher Who Shall Not Be Named

Blackwater Creek Part 2 of 3: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario

June 1st, 2018

Welcome to Blackwater Creek!

This episode is part two of three episodes in which we play the Call of Cthulhu scenario Blackwater Creek, one of the scenarios included with the CoC 7th Edition Keeper's Screen.

In this episode we crunch our way through further misadventures and missteps. People die, there's a pig roast, and I continue my tradition of being a very beginning Keeper with a few rough spots here and there. C'est la vie!

Crunch Warning!
Did I mention that we were sorta new to this? Well, not to gaming, but to podcasting. I promise this is the last time we'll serve crunchy snacks while recording. Who knew?? Anyway, just imagine that someone is feasting on small squirmy Chthulian nasties - kerrunch gobble slurp! Mea culpa.

Other sound quality notes: I hope that this segment sounds a bit cleaner than Part One! There were a few spots where I had to completely mute some of the audio tracks due to excessive background noise. And during playback I noticed that you can really hear the road crew that was thumping around down the street. Your constructive comments welcome!

With that disclaimer out of the way, sit back and ejnoy as we take you on a journey to Blackwater Creek...

Blackwater Creek Part 1 of 3: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario

May 22nd, 2018

Welcome to Blackwater Creek!

For the next few episodes we'll be playing the Call of Cthulhu scenario Blackwater Creek, which is one of the two scenarios included with the CoC 7th Edition Keeper's Screen. Assuming the usual introductory nature of a Keeper's Screen, I was pleased to find it was not overly simplistic after all. However that might cause trouble for the beginning Keeper, as this scenario might be too open-ended and certain issues could crop up. It certainly provided our beginning Keeper (myself) with a bit of a challenge! Hopefully it won't be too evident during play. I'll cover some of these thoughts at the end of the last session so as to avoid any spoilers.

I found one thing very helpful when preparing for the session: When you purchase one of the new 7th edition products directly from Chaosium, they will also include a PDF copy of the components at no charge. This made the job of preparing the player handouts so much easier. It was simple to print out the necessary player sheets directly from my PDF copy. I don't know if this is the intent for all products but I've purchased several that way.

Warning: Now With Added Crunch!
Did I mention that we were sorta new to this? Well, not to gaming, but to podcasting. I promise this is the last time [one would hope] that we'll serve crunchy snacks while recording. Who knew?? Anyway, just imagine that someone is feasting on small squirmy Chthulian nasties - kerrunch gobble slurp! Mea culpa.

Movie Review: The Call of Cthulhu by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society

March 22nd, 2018

Welcome to another episode of 107.7 -- The Outer Ring!

In today's episode we will be reviewing the movie The Call of Cthulhu released by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. This is a modern-day presentation of the penultimate Lovecraft story The Call of Cthulhu.

Here's what the makers had to say about it:

"HPLHS brings Cthulhu to the screen as it was meant to be seen. Eighteen months of production and a cast of more than 50 actors went into making this film a period spectacle that must seen to be believed."

"A dying professor leaves his great-nephew a collection of documents pertaining to the Cthulhu Cult. Crossing decades and continents, the man begins piecing together the dread implications of the professor's inquiries. Written in 1926, the famed story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score."

It was shot digitally I believe and then converted to resemble the format of an old fashioned silent movie in black and white. Very interesting because they got the exact tone of classic movies such as the Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Werewolf, etc. Think of the look and feel of one of the old Lon Chaney movies.

Depending on your age, I'd say think of one of the movies that used to be on TV when you were a kid. That's not terribly relevant anymore these days but it's the kind of stuff that would scare me when I was a kid some long time ago. So in contrast to today's popular movies, the Call of Cthulhu is shall we say... slower-paced and not even slightly scary? But that was a deliberate choice to keep the movie as similar as possible to typical movies of that time period.

I didn't find the slow pace to be bothersome, but I think a few others that watched it with me did. To my way of thinking it had a slow exposition, very similar to what you would consider typical of both the literature as well as the role playing game based on the same topic. In other words, to me it was like watching a movie adaptation of an actual role playing game session. So to that end I thoroughly enjoyed it!

In the end, Scott rated it an overall 4.5 out of 5, and Willie gave it a 4.27 out of 5. It's a great value for the money and we highly recommend the movie! I've included a link to the HPLS online store where you can get a copy of the movie for yourself.

There is a fascinating writeup of the production process for this movie at the HPLS website. Definitely check this out!

Now in Post-Production: Blackwater Creek (a Call of Cthulhu scenario)

March 11th, 2018

Hello listeners! We haven't published anything for a while so I wanted to give everyone a news update. Our local gaming group has not been idle. Last week we got together to play the introductory scenario Blackwater Creek from the Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition Keeper's Screen. We have just over 3 hours of audio that I am in the process of editing down to a series of episodes. Everyone enjoyed themselves! The session will give us 3 or 4 episodes' worth of material. We didn't quite finish the scenario which means we'll be recording another session later this month to wrap it up and then roll right into the next session.

We also watched the movie The Call of Cthulhu by the HPLHS. In a separate episode, Scott and Willie will give you their thoughts on that most excellent movie!

Until then, dear listeners, don't dream too deeply! You never know what might materialize out of the darkest realms of your innermost consciousness...

Infinity: The Game - Operation Icestorm

Mission 2: Learning The Effective Use Of Lieutenants (or Not)

Barely recovered from our first dip into the world of Infinity, Scott and Willie continue their learning with Mission 2 of Operation Icestorm, in which we add one more model to the mix. (Playing our 3 basic riflemen and adding a fourth model for the Lieutenant.)

Spoiler Alert: We've literally played one game to date so... mistakes will be made!

OK, so Scott was leaning his face on his hand at one point during the episode while he was speaking. Trust me, he was not actually intoxicated. He will be punished for this.
